Ode to Valerie Hunter Gordon

Valerie Hunter Gordon, yay for you!
Brilliant woman!
Mother of a baby that needed nappies.
What? Nappies? Yes!
Valerie Who?
Today especially I’m just plain thankful for disposable nappies, and Valerie Hunter Gordon, from somewhere in Britain created the first one that started the big chain of money-making-human-waste-collectors us as parents come to love. I can’t imagine having survived this day with the old-style terri/cloth nappy. Sheeeeesh. (And just for clarification here, I’m talking baby ones, not adult.
)
If there’s anything that is certain right now, as certain as death and taxes, it’s that right now 95% (My thumb-suck number…) of babies in the world are using disposable nappies. So, what’s the point? It’s a good investment. Look at any publicly listed company that produces nappies (OK, what I know of the stock exchange is not much…), you’ll probably notice a strong upward trend. But don’t take stock exchange advice from me.
But ja, thanks to Pampers, Huggies, Cuddlers (well, less so Cuddlers, their nappies aren’t as great as the others) and the rest of you. Please make the nappies cost less! Newborn nappies can cost R1.20 each, and the older they go, they could cost up to R2.50 each, and a 14-month-old wears like 4 or 5 of the cheap R2.00 Huggies a day! I hate to see money go down the toilet (argh, haha!) like that… And R2.50 is cheap when compared to the “Premium” brands where they start at R3.00 each. *sigh*
Now, if only we can do something about how to make these used disposable nappies be more biodegradable.

I agree. Nappies are too expensive. But what we can to do? I love my baby and will buy all the best for him.
