Anyway, I’m going to this month’s one in Cape Town…

Lots of people on the list that I know personally (well, have met personally at least. Hi Guy. Hi Neil. Hi Ian. Hi Alan. Hi Leon), and a bunch whose names that I recognise and seen on mailing lists and websites (Hi, uh, a *bunch* of you!). Should be fun meeting ya’ll.

The venue for this month’s 27 Dinner is Relish, some place I’ve never heard of… From the looks of the website, it has awesome views of Cape Town, and also from the looks of the website, not exactly a place I’d normally find myself for any usual occasion (Spur is about the extent of outings I get when kids are involved…). But, this coming Tuesday will be me alone with 79 other people. Should be loads of fun. Now, what shall I wear?

Oh, what’s 27dinner all about? Hell, if you’re reading this blog entry and you don’t know, then I have no idea how you got here… 27dinner is “like” the geekdinner that happens every now and again too, but the topic of conversation and attendance is broadened outside of your ‘typical’ geek, including marketers, entrepeneurs, writers, media peoples, etc. But don’t let me try to explain what it is, I’m just going for the food. (haha, no, not really. But I’m sure the food will be good too…)

If you add a note onto a picture, and name the description either "ho ho ho hat" or "ho ho ho beard", you get a xmas hat or Santa beard overlayed inside the note, to be moved on your flickr photo.

Click on Settings -> Notifications, and at the bottom of the page is the section to setup the mobile notifications.

My latest favourite would-like-to-have-for-novelty-purposes is their Desktop USB Missile Launcher.  That’s just cool man!  Pity that it requires 3xAA batteries though, not sure why.  AA batteries are typically 1.5V each, so the three will give the thing 4.5V in total.  A USB port can give 5V, so why not just get the current from the USB port??  Odd.  Either way though, it’s still damn cool!

Maxim lists top game toilets [via Joystiq]

Sometimes it seems like anything video-game related that can be listed has been listed. Games, weapons, underused franchises, bad dialog… there are so many that we’ve even done a list of lists.

But just when you think there are no more listable things out there, Maxim comes along and puts together a list of the top ten in-game toilets.

And I must say, those are some good-looking toilets…
Why don’t my toilets ever look that good? I need a new video card. Or an XBox360.

Parents, get your kids GMail
This is to all the parents out there who are constantly having their children nagging them to let them have an email account, but every day you hear more and more about how horribly and nasty spam is! Well, there’s a solution.

Yup, that’s what a lad named Krillr says. (Hey dude!) GMail is the answer. (Don’t have an account? I have a ton of invites, I’ll send you one. Comment here.) I’m not so sure. Lately there’s been spam slipping through into my inbox. And, it’s not like GMail deletes any spam either, it’s still accessible in the Spam mailbox. “Don’t open that mailbox” is not going to fly with kids… I have kids, and I want them (well, at least the eldest, he’s 8 now), to have e-mail, and access to the ‘net. But I also don’t want their innocence gone so early. Porn and spam peddlers will go through all kinds of hoops and loops to get their product out there, and I don’t want my son to accidentally click on the wrong links.

Apparently with Google hosting your mail for you (through Google Hosted), you have a bit more control over the individual GMail accounts, but not sufficient for me to give a GMail account to my kids.

Share Firefox with a friend. If your friend downloads Firefox before September 15, you’ll both be immortalized in Firefox 2. [ worldfirefoxday.com ]

Yup, you can get your name onto a digital Firefox Friends Wall, if you nominate one of your friends/loved ones to receive an invite to download Firefox, and they download it on or before the 15th of September this year.

The Firefox Friends Wall will be a physical wall at Mozilla headquarters in California, and an in-browser version will also be available in Firefox 2 once it’s out of beta.

I’ve been using Firefox 2.0b1 for the past week or two at work on Ubuntu, and so far it’s been stable, and usable. I’ve not been digging around too much to see what the differences between 2.0 and 1.5.latest are, I’ve just been using it for every day use, and so far no problems. I’ve had to modify one or two of my extensions to be available for 2.0 (Notably I was trying out the Mysql Community Tool bar, which works just fine in Firefox 2.0b1 by the way!). So far so good Mozilla, keep it up!
