Ever since coming across Kevin Smith‘s blog the other day, I’ve subscribed to its RSS feed, and been reading each and every post he writes. Nothing majorly interesting, most of the posts since then on the topic of Clerks 2 (which I still need to see, even though I was offered a cam-job version of it to watch… Yech, I hate camjobs. I watched Chucky’s Bride on two VCDs. That was crap. Never again. Thank god I didn’t pay to watch Chucky’s Bride though. How crap was that movie? But I digress…). I dunno, reading somebody like Kevin’s blog puts a face and a person behind the persona and name that flashes up on the screen before and after a movie. He has a wife. A kid (shame poor kid, one day he’s/she’s going to see his/her dad’s movies. That’ll be a laugh, eh-eh-eh.).
Anyway, so Kevin’s birthday was yesterday, and he blogged about. Exciting stuff isn’t it?
I dunno, I’m not the kind of person that’s a raving fan about anything or anyone, and it’s the same with Kevin and his work. Kevin will always be Silent Bob to me (and a lot of other people I’m sure), even though he’s the genius behind the movies that Silent Bob features in. That’s besides the point. Kevin’s movies just seemed to make an impression on me sufficiently enough to step up my level of fandom from zero to one (No, I’m not on his myspace friends list like the other 80000 losers…). But I digress again…
Happy Birthday Kevin, many returns, and more movies! More! More! (Get Shannon Elizabeth back in another movie!)

Frank Herbert’s 1963 Dune is to science fiction what The Lord of The Rings is to fantasy: the most popular, most influential and most critically-acclaimed novel in the genre.
The above quote is from jitterbug.com, listing some rather interesting similarities between the Star Wars movies, and the Dune books…
There’s a lot of reading there, but the first bit is already interesting enough, with a Jabba The Hut can Leto II cartoon too!

I got to make the exact flick I wanted to make, resulting in my fave of the bunch.
That’s what Kevin Smith had to say about Clerks 2, which opened at the box office this past Friday… I have no idea how long it will be before we get to see the movie here in South-Africa, but if it’s anything like any of his other movies, I’ll be wanting to see it as many times in the first week, as I did Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back. 3 times in the first week. Yes, it was that good. I even managed to con the wife into watching it on DVD once.
She’s not a fan. I am. Admittedly, I’m in no way the biggest fan (of anything or anyone), I’ve seen most of the movies Kevin wrote/directed (Including The Flying Car), and it all started with a big “WTF?! This movie is black & white!!! I want my money back!!!” when we rented Clerks back in 1997. The wife didn’t like it, I was intrigued enough to finish watching it (That, and I wasn’t going to *not* watch a movie I paid good money to see… Glad I finished watching it…).
For me, Mallrats was next, and there’s nothing like Jason Lee‘s “Say, would you like a chocolate-covered pretzel?” line to bring back those memories. Oh, that line, and the “Oh look, a sailboat” series of incidents. Heh-heh.
I think it’s time to track down a copy of Clerks and watch that again. And Mallrats. And Dogma. Dammit, Kevin, I’m sure you won’t disappoint with Clerks 2. When’s the DVD coming? I must see it!

I recently heard about, and then watched the sneak preview trailer for Doom: The Movie.
I can honestly say that this is the least excited I’ve ever been to see a movie that I thought I really wanted to see. It stars The Rock, and has a seriously Alien feel to it… It looks bad.
But don’t take my word for it, go check it out for yourself.

About a month ago, George Lucas unleashed the final installment of what has dual-trilogy Star Wars movies. After seeing this last movie, I sure hope it really is the final installment. All in all, I found Episode 3 to be the best of all 6 visually, but it takes first place, along side Episode 2 : Attack of the Clones, for being the worst movies of them all. All in all. That doesn’t mean the movie is utter and complete drivel though. Only partially so. I you haven’t read Salvo’s views on this movie yet, do so now. Either way, read on to hear my opinion. (Movie spoilers inside, so don’t read if you don’t want to know details about the movie.

It never forgives. It never forgets.
The only reason we rented this movie last night was due to a radio call-in session the other day on 5FM, when Koula had people phone in an mention the scariest move they’ve seen in recent times… The Grudge was one of the movies mentioned, and I’ve been craving to see a good horror for ages. Other than that, I knew nothing of this movie, nothing about who stars in it, who directs it, nothing.

Well, what can I say! I waited, like everyone else, a few years to watch the climactic end of the six part series of Star Wars starting with Episode IV. Well, I initially found that Episode II was not so good and that they could have done a lot better at it than they did.
I managed to get my hands on the animated Clone Wars stuff that they are showing on MTV recently. I must say that this animated series of twenty or so episodes tied quite nicely into Episode III.
For instance, the start of Episode III introduces us to General Grievous, the leader of the Droids, and he is coughing (being a cyborg and all). You are never exposed to the reason why he is coughing, unless you watched the animated series first. The actual reason for his coughing is that he ran into Mace Windu, who used the Force to injure Grievous in his chest.
The whole fall from the Light side to the Dark side was handled very well, with some weak acting from Hayden. I felt he could have added more gusto to his acting and that would have made the fall to the Dark side much more dark.
The genius of George Lucas is well documented and so I won’t go there – suffice to say that he tied EVERYTHING up perfectly.
Everything went smoothly and the reasons for Anakin’s fall to the Dark side was beautifully orchestrated and for very different reasons that I had ever imagined. I felt sorry for Anakin’s fall, and could completely understand and appreciate his love for Padme. Like I mentioned earlier – AWESOME.

War. Not competition. War.
If you live in South-Africa, and you go to the movies at least once every couple of weeks like I do (or if you read news websites or pay attention to the grapevine), you’ll likely know about the price cuts that both Ster Kinekor and Nu-Metro introduced about a month ago. If you are not aware, time to go read some news. Here are some of the more important stories in the saga:
So, after reading the above, we can deduct that not everybody is happy about the price cuts. Understandably. To me, it makes sense, as a cinema that only has 20 people in that all paid R37 to see the movie, will make the companies less money than a half-full or full cinema of people that paid between R5 and R14 for the movie. It’s simple maths really. But. What Nu-Metro is doing with regards to “instructing” Ster-Kinekor to show movies at full price instead of the lower price is just plain low. It’s gone as far as the following picture being shown on the Ster-Kinekor homepage:
 |
Due to circumstances, I don’t go to the movies as much as I would have liked, even with the big price cut, but for what it’s worth, if Nu-Metro is going to pull stunts like this, then they deserve to not get my business! Or anybody’s for that matter! (Besides, movies like Robots and Miss Congeniality II are *not* required to be seen on the Big Screen, I can wait for them to be on DVD and rent them… Saw, on the other hand, I’d like to see on the Big Screen. Nothing like a good jumpy suspense horror flick in a big dark room to get the adrenaline going…)
Do what you may, but if you ask me, pull the finger at Nu-Metro and support Ster-Kinekor.
Update:
Another movie added to the Ster-Kinekor list of movies not able to be shown at ‘affordable’ prices:
