It’s been a couple of days since Ol’ Steve released unto us the updated iPod Videos, Nanos and Shuffles, and then of course the other good bits that came with that 12 September “unveil”, like iTunes and the iTV…
I’ve had some time to ingest much of what was said, and I’ve had a look at some of the pictures of the new gadgets.
The new Shuffles are oh-so-cute, just like the first generation…
The new iPod Videos are even better then their predecessors, more disk, brighter screen, just pure yum.
But the new Nanos? Euch! They look like mini-Minis! Those rounded corners, the bright colors on the dull surface! Yuck. I never liked the iPod Minis to begin with, and I loved the way the first iPod Nano looked. But now?! The Nanos look ugly. Plain and simple. Ugly. Sorry Steve, you took a step back here.
I still don’t own a single thing Apple, so it might just be the Apple-Envy coming out here.

I came across this site a couple of months ago, and something similar came up in conversation this morning…
It’s a site called The Bubble Project, and what this guy is doing is pretty simple. He prints speech bubble stickers, and goes around the city sticking them on movie posters and other advertising posters, all blank. Then later, same day, next day, whenever, he goes back and takes photos of the speech bubbles… Only now, other people have written something on the stickers. The results are humorous and disturbing all at the same time… Check it out. Careful though, there’s a lot of pictures there, it could take a while before you emerge back into the light.

This morning I had a Jimmy Neutron moment…
I had to go put petrol into my car at the Tokai BP, and while waiting I saw their “Wild Bean Cafe” sign. I had a thought that, with the past couple of weeks worth of no-blogging, maybe I should force myself into some form of habitual blogging mood. Then it struck me. No, not the keys, the idea. Coffee! I can blog about coffee!
I did a quick count from memory how many coffee shops (or at least shops that sell coffee) there are within a short walk from where I work in Cape Town CBD… 10. All within about 300 meters from our front door.
So, this is the start of a (hopefully) regular blog-posting about my experience and tastes of coffee from around here. Do keep in mind that I’m no professional coffee-taster.
Wild Bean Cafe – Cafe Latte
This morning’s coffee was a large Latte from the Wild Bean Cafe at the Tokai BP petrol station. It cost R9.95. It was made within about a minute. I was given a steaming paper cup, one of those nice heat-restistant thicker-than-paper cups, which is nice ‘cos it doesn’t scorch the crap out of your hand. Three sugars go in, sippy-cup lid goes on, and I’m outta there. After spilling some of the coffee in the car (due to not having one of those cup-holder doodads in the car), I finally managed to take a sip while driving. The first thing that went through my mind was “Where’s the caffeine?!”. The Latte was weak, to say the least. Little bit of a smokey taste, Arabica beans I believe. But weak. I think all they do is use the same amount of coffee powder, and just stick more water into it, to get a Large instead of a standard, weakening it. So the standard size might taste a bit better. Regardless, I didn’t have the standard size. I finished the coffee, feeling rather cheated.
Plus points for Wild Bean Cafe is the cup the coffee comes in. The sippy-cup lid even has a big red “CAUTION! Hot contents!” sticker on. Minus points is really that the coffee tastes too watered down. If you want a great coffee, then don’t bother buying theirs. If you want an average cup off coffee, then try the standard sized one. (Even though it’s only R1 cheaper…)
Anybody else tried their coffee?
What’s next? I’m going to take on McDonald’s coffee I think. Get all the dodgy ones out the way first.
UPDATE 1: Apparently, it’s been decided that coffee *is* in fact good for you! I came across this article on the Cape Argus just now: Coffee shakes off bad rap…
UPDATE 2: That same article has subsequently made it onto IOL too…

Maxim lists top game toilets [via Joystiq]
Sometimes it seems like anything video-game related that can be listed has been listed. Games, weapons, underused franchises, bad dialog… there are so many that we’ve even done a list of lists.
But just when you think there are no more listable things out there, Maxim comes along and puts together a list of the top ten in-game toilets.
Yes, toilets. Haha, this is newsworthy!
And I must say, those are some good-looking toilets…
Why don’t my toilets ever look that good? I need a new video card. Or an XBox360.

“The above billboard was spotted near the Ralston exit in Redwood”
Found this on digg. Pretty nifty that there are now Ubuntu billboards on the side of the road… Even the sysadmin at my workplace has given up on Fedora in favour of Ubuntu, and so far he seems very happy with it…

Ever since coming across Kevin Smith‘s blog the other day, I’ve subscribed to its RSS feed, and been reading each and every post he writes. Nothing majorly interesting, most of the posts since then on the topic of Clerks 2 (which I still need to see, even though I was offered a cam-job version of it to watch… Yech, I hate camjobs. I watched Chucky’s Bride on two VCDs. That was crap. Never again. Thank god I didn’t pay to watch Chucky’s Bride though. How crap was that movie? But I digress…). I dunno, reading somebody like Kevin’s blog puts a face and a person behind the persona and name that flashes up on the screen before and after a movie. He has a wife. A kid (shame poor kid, one day he’s/she’s going to see his/her dad’s movies. That’ll be a laugh, eh-eh-eh.).
Anyway, so Kevin’s birthday was yesterday, and he blogged about. Exciting stuff isn’t it?
I dunno, I’m not the kind of person that’s a raving fan about anything or anyone, and it’s the same with Kevin and his work. Kevin will always be Silent Bob to me (and a lot of other people I’m sure), even though he’s the genius behind the movies that Silent Bob features in. That’s besides the point. Kevin’s movies just seemed to make an impression on me sufficiently enough to step up my level of fandom from zero to one (No, I’m not on his myspace friends list like the other 80000 losers…). But I digress again…
Happy Birthday Kevin, many returns, and more movies! More! More! (Get Shannon Elizabeth back in another movie!)

Frank Herbert’s 1963 Dune is to science fiction what The Lord of The Rings is to fantasy: the most popular, most influential and most critically-acclaimed novel in the genre.
The above quote is from jitterbug.com, listing some rather interesting similarities between the Star Wars movies, and the Dune books…
There’s a lot of reading there, but the first bit is already interesting enough, with a Jabba The Hut can Leto II cartoon too!

Holy crap!!! The above is from the Joystiq entry on Is your PC rig ready for Crysis, who in turn got it from the Crysis Online forums… This is insane!!! This is why I’ve given up upgrading my PC, rather favouring playing games on a console, or playing games on my PC that fit into my lowly specs. I don’t have a crap PC, an AMD64 3000+ and a Geforce 6600GT PCI-Express card with 1GB ram is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s now become the minimum requirements for a game? That’s just sad.
If you haven’t heard of Crysis, then you need to crawl from under the rock you’ve been living under, and go check out the several gameplay footage videos of Crysis over at Google Video or Youtube.
